The graph above shows the amount of website traffic for all domains with at least 1 million visitors in August 2018. For Booking.com there is only one domain (.com), but in the case of TripAdvisor we added 32 different domains. TripAdvisor has many international domains such as www.tripadvisor.co.uk, www.tripadvisor.it etc.
#1 visited websites – 588.8 million. TripAdvisor with visitors. This is not surprising. TripAdvisor offers more than 660 million reviews of accommodations, restaurants, and activities worldwide.
Although many people visit TripAdvisor only to read reviews, the website also offers the ability to compare hotel prices from many different booking websites. They are also creating a booking experience directly on TripAdvisor.
The second most visited website is Booking.com. The Amsterdam-based OTA (Online Travel Agency) received 563.3 million visitors in August 2018.
Best Hotel Booking Sites In 2023
Most visitors go to Booking.com to book accommodation. Traditionally focused on hotels, they are also starting to add millions of non-traditional accommodations. The website now has more than 27 million accommodation listings, including more than 5 million non-hotel listings.
The third place belongs to Airbnb. Thanks to this fast-growing company, travelers are no longer limited to traditional hotels. Now we can express ourselves in the local culture by staying in someone’s home.
Airbnb gets 1/3 of Booking.com’s visits, but that could change quickly. While they still don’t have anywhere near the number of listings on Booking.com, they continue to add accommodations at a rapid pace. And don’t forget that they’re expanding into new services like local expertise.
Expedia is the second most popular OTA for hotel bookings after booking.com. This website is used more in the US than in the EU. Graphs of app usage and downloads further confirm these regional differences in app preferences.

What makes Expedia different is that they combine hotels with flights to get the best deals. Apart from hotels, they offer a wide range of other tourism products such as cruises and things to do.
Trivago is a German-based meta-search engine that compares hotel prices on over 400 booking websites for over 1.8 million hotels.
They include more than 1.8 million hotels, but that doesn’t even come close to the 27 million listings on Booking.com. This means that you can still find many hotels on Booking.com that are not listed on Trivago.
Skyscanner is the de facto standard for comparing flight prices in Europe. It’s a great tool for searching flights and comparing prices for almost all airlines.

Ctrip is rapidly gaining popularity. In 4 years, Ctrip has risen from #24 in 2014 to #7.
Ctrip is one of the largest OTAs in China and is looking to expand its reach globally. Apart from hotels, they offer flights, train tickets, tours and any other travel services you can think of.

As the name suggests, their focus is on hotels rather than flights or alternative accommodation. Their loyalty program can be a great reason to book on Hotels.com.
How To Make Sure The Travel Sites You Visit Are Safe
For every 10 nights booked on Hotels.com, you get one night free. Many hotels participate in this loyalty program and you can visit different hotels to fill up your digital stamp card. Next time you’re on a business trip, book your hotel on hotel.com and collect your free nights for your next family trip!
This meta-search engine started out as a flight comparison tool, but slowly shifted to hotels. Kayak is very popular in the US, but we don’t think it gets the credit it deserves.
Their flight search in particular offers many interesting features such as searching from any airport within 70 miles and their price prediction tool. Another useful tool is the option to search for trips of x days in a certain period of time. For example, you can search for the cheapest weekend starting from December 15th and 4 weeks after that.
But it doesn’t stop there, Kayak is expanding its offerings beyond flights. Their car rental search is an example of how users can find not only the cheapest car rental, but also the one that best suits their needs. For example, if you want to rent a car for the route from Cancun to Tulum, you can choose whether you want to drop the car off at another location. This option is sometimes cheaper than taking a taxi on the same route.
Know The Best Hotel And Airfare Booking Sites
Jalan has yet to gain much attention in English-speaking countries. This Japanese OTA claims to be one of the largest online booking sites for andriokan hotels in Japan.
Although Jalan was not among the top 30 travel booking websites in 2014, they are now in the top 10 worldwide. Interestingly, the OTA only targets accommodation in Japan and is not listed internationally.
With the following graph, we learn more about the distribution of website traffic among these top 10 booking websites.
If we also include the share of Airbnb and Expedia, we see that the share is concentrated around the top four. The top 4 travel booking websites get over 75% of all traffic from the top 10.
Top Travel Websites That Every Traveler Must Try!
Most travelers from Western countries have not heard of Ctrip (#7) and Jalan (#10), but their use is growing rapidly. In 2014, Ctrip was only ranked #24, and Jalan didn’t even make the top 30. Ctrip is one of the largest OTAs in China and Jalan in Japan.
Ctrip’s parent company acquired Edinburgh-based Skyscanner in 2016 and uses Trip.com to reach international customers. Note that the number of visitors in the graph above only includes visits to the Ctrip.com domain.
One of the main reasons for Ctrip’s rapid growth is the rapid growth of the middle class. Add in the fact that China’s population is 4 times the size of the US, and you can see why they are rising so quickly in this ranking.
There is no rapid growth of the middle class in Japan. Their position in the top 10 is explained by their proximity to China and the aging of the population. Most of Vietnam’s 127 million people are retiring and now have the money and time to travel. A good example is the train from Hanoi to Sapa. The route has always been a very popular trip among tourists, but nowadays you will see many Vietnamese tourists using this train as a leisure trip.

To compile a list of the most popular travel booking apps, we compared daily active usage and the number of downloads in August 2018.
Data is based on downloads and usage of Android apps from the Google Play Store. Unfortunately, data for iOS apps was not available.
Please note that website access is measured globally and app usage and downloads are split between the EU and the US.
EU data is based on the 5 most populous countries of the European Union. These are Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy and Spain. It also makes comparison easier because these countries have the same population as the US (between 325-330 million).
Top 10 Luxurious Hotels In Vietnam
HomeAway has its roots in the US, but has begun to expand internationally. Although the HomeAway website is not in the top ten, it is the 6th most popular app in Europe in terms of daily active users (DAU).
HomeAway differs from Airbnb by offering vacation rentals that can be entire apartments, houses, or villas. Airbnb focuses more on home sharing.
At first glance, HomeAway appears to be less popular in the US than in the EU, but if we include VRBO, we see that the brand ranks 6th out of the top 10 in the US. VRBO is part of the HomeAway brand and has the same interface and listings as HomeAway.
The top 10 travel booking apps have 2.7 times more daily active users in the EU than in the US.
A Complete Package To Paris
Furthermore, we see that app usage in Europe is more concentrated around the top 3 apps. In Europe, TripAdvisor (#1), Booking.com (#2), and Airbnb (#3) account for 90% of app usage. The same three most used apps in the US take 70% of the total share.
