Rome is a beautiful place! One of the most beautiful cities in Italy and one of the most impressive cities in the world! I often refer to it as a museum city because you really feel like you are walking through a huge museum.

Italy Travel Tips: Do’s And Don’ts In Italy!

Every street, every church, every building breathes history. There is so much to see in Rome and it is a city like no other, a place that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.

You actually visit Rome at the same time you are… Rome is packed. It is certainly the case for the main tourist attractions. Visiting the Trevi Fountain in the middle of the day is not really fun. It’s so busy that it makes many other popular destinations seem like a rather quiet experience…

Despite the crowds, there are many ways to enjoy the city. Below are some top tips to help you get the most out of your trip to Rome and have a more enjoyable visit. Continue reading!

When you travel to Rome for the first time, you probably have a pretty good idea of what you want to see. The Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Vatican…

Things To Do In Rome To Avoid The Crowds

But you will quickly realize that you are not the only one. There are huge crowds at each of the most famous landmarks. Often, it’s so busy that it’s hard to really appreciate the beauty of the place and enjoy it.

In addition, tickets for the most popular places – the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums – usually sell out well in advance. So if you absolutely want to visit the Colosseum or see the Sistine Chapel, you MUST book in advance.

Here you can get priority tickets for the Colosseum and here – for the Vatican Museums. In high season (April – October), make sure to book at least a few weeks in advance. In the winter, you might be able to find tickets the same week too, but don’t count on it.

Also, keep in mind that some places – especially the Vatican – may be closed for some religious celebrations or other occasions. When you book in advance, you will immediately see which days are not available and you will be able to adjust your itinerary if necessary. Otherwise, you risk not being able to visit places at all…

Top Travel Tips For A Stay In Rome

TIP: If the tickets you want are sold out, you can still visit the place by joining a guided tour. Many tour companies have access to additional tickets and sometimes pre-book them in advance as well. More information on tours and tickets below.

If you’re like most tourists, you only have two or three days in Rome and you want to see it all. Do you really want to spend most of your time queuing at the most famous attractions, wondering exactly where to go and what to see and completely miss the most authentic travel experience?

If you don’t, then you should really consider booking ‘skip the line’ tickets or guided tours. Otherwise – if you don’t have time – you can also skip some must-see places and just see them from the outside. Take your time to get to know the city and don’t waste it queuing!

Guided tours can be ‘touristy’ and cost you a few extra euros, but considering how much your trip costs, it’s really worth spending that tiny extra bit and getting the most out of your time in Rome. Besides, your trip to Rome is not cheap and it would be a complete waste of money to spend all your time waiting in lines or visiting a place and getting completely overwhelmed without knowing exactly where to go and what to see…

Rome Travel Tips: 12 Things To Know Before You Go

Skip the lines at the Colosseum by booking your tickets in advance, take a guided tour, or just see the Colosseum from the outside and not go inside at all.

How To Visit The Colosseum In 2023: Tickets, Best Tours & Tips

The ruins of the Colosseum’s basements are worth a visit, as are the Arena floor and the rest of the Colosseum, but do yourself a favor and research exactly what you want to see and how best to do it beforehand! Otherwise, you’ll get overwhelmed, not see everything, and/or end up paying too much just to get in.

TIP: We recently did and highly recommend this Colosseum tour. After hours of research, it seemed like the most complete tour and we were so glad we did it. Yes, it was more expensive than the entrance tickets, but it saved us a lot of stress and we saw all the best places in just 3 hours. And yes, the Colosseum Underground and Arena Floor are totally worth it!

PRO TIP: If you’re visiting the Colosseum on your own, be sure to book your tickets in advance! Without a guide, you can choose between regular priority tickets or – slightly more expensive – tickets that also include a visit to the Arena Floor (recommended).

Good to know: The earlier you book, the more options of available time slots you will have. On the other hand, the Colosseum usually releases its tickets only a month in advance. For this, a guided tour is again a better option, as you can usually book it several months in advance. Alternatively – on the Tiqets website – you can select the tickets you want and the date you want to visit the Colosseum, fill in your email address and they will send you a reminder as soon as the tickets become available.

Important Rome Travel Tips You Need To Know

The interior of the Colosseum as seen from the Arena floor gives you a very different perspective of this unique monument.

Visit the Vatican Museums on a guided tour or plan your visit at a quieter time. Do you really want to spend 3 hours in line and wander through the Vatican Museums to spend 2 minutes inside the Sistine Chapel to see the famous ceiling painted by Michelangelo?

I understand you want to see the Vatican museums – they are worth it! Just try to at least plan your visit in such a way that you spend more time in the museums and not waiting to get in or trying to figure out exactly where to go.

Today, you MUST book your Vatican Museums tickets online. We did this and check in was easy and smooth. However, we absolutely regretted not booking a guided visit. The place is crowded, it’s not at all clear where exactly to go and what’s worth more… After all, all routes lead to the Sistine Chapel, so we got there, but we have no idea what else we missed… Either way, we found a visit really stressful and overwhelming. Next time, I would definitely go with a tour.

Rome Travel Tips: Where To Go And What To See In 48 Hours

TIP: Going first thing in the morning (=as soon as it opens) or very late in the afternoon is the best way to visit the Vatican Museums. I’d also advise booking a guided tour – that way you’re sure to really see all the best places. This is the most popular tour of the Vatican Museums, this is a great option for early birds without the crowds, and here you can find (an overwhelming) selection of everything
