Tourist Attraction Yogyakarta

One of the most interesting places in Yogyakarta is Sumur Gumuling, better known as the Underground Mosque. Once you enter the mosque, the road leads you to the center of it.

Jogja Indo Tours And Travel

The center of the mosque includes four steps that form a pyramid shape and a large open circular roof that reveals beautiful daylight. The underground mosque is part of the large Taman Sari complex which is another thing we will do in Yogyakarta.

Taman Sari was once a bathhouse and has a beautiful blend of Dutch and Javanese architecture. Around there, you can find many beautiful paintings, souvenir shops, cafes, and artisans. Plan to spend around 60-90 minutes for Taman Sari and Sumur Gumuling.

Taman Sari and Sumur Gumuling are open from 9 am to 3 pm and the entrance fee is 15000 IDR (1 USD) per person.

Malioboro Street is the place to go shopping. It is a main street in the heart of Yogyakarta with everything from small street vendors, art shops, clothes to souvenirs.

Yogyakarta Travel Guide (itinerary + Budget)

Once a week there is a Chinese village with all the local food. Try to avoid craft shops in this area, these are often scams.

If you are into the history of Yogyakarta, we recommend that you visit Fort Vredeburg which is located at the end of Malioboro road.

As mentioned earlier, Yogyakarta is a place for nature. The famous Mantrijeron has many paintings. It’s nice to walk around the area and see some of the best paintings in Yogyakarta.

Get up at 4 AM to catch the sunrise at Borobudur temple. From Yogyakarta city, it will take 90 minutes to reach Borobudur temple. Plan to spend about 1.5 hours on both tours. PS: Do not try to fly your drone over these temples.

Things To Do In Yogyakarta For The Sustainable Tourist

Borobudur temple has four levels and has a total height of 34 meters. On the top level is a load of small stupas and one big stupa in the middle. Take a closer look inside these stupas to see the buddhas inside. You can join a mini tour to Borobudur, Prambanan, and Merapi volcano that includes hotel pickup, guide, and entry to all sites.

The biggest temple in Indonesia is Prambanan. Unlike Borobudur, this is not a Buddhist but a Hindu temple. There are three main temples, called Shiva Mahadeva, Candi Vishnu, and Candi Sewu. The entire complex consists of about 240 small and large temples. Shiva Mahadeva is 47 meters tall! From Borobudur to Prambanan is a 1.5 hour drive.

Borobudur + Prambanan Temple Tour Booking The easiest way is to book the tour in advance online. However, it is possible to do it at your hostel/hotel in Yogyakarta. This should cost you around 130 – 150K for a shared car. Another option is to take a Grab Taxi. At both tourist spots, there are tolls for government officials.

Have some rest for the rest of the day and visit the Mantrijeron area of Yogyakarta. Here are many small cafes and restaurants. Some are more hidden than others. Most of them are on Jalan Prawirotaman Street. Here are our favorites:

Our favorite view is Becici Peak & Bukit Panguk Kediwung. For both ideas, there is an entry fee of 10.000 IDR.

One of the natural views in Yogyakarta made this beautiful heart by the sea. This page is best viewed from above. The artist must have expected drones to come here to take pictures or videos.

A 300 meter long bamboo bridge crosses the rice fields. Before planning a trip here, ask the locals if the rice fields are green. In summer, June to August, it is mostly dry and not green. Update 2021: This position seems to have been closed completely.

Think of Batu as a small theme park. Wood is used for all kinds of things, such as houses, statues and lounges. All mountain areas have better climate.

One of the culturally rich areas I visited was Yogyakarta, often called ‘Jokja’, ‘Jogja’ or “Jokjakarta”. (Y is pronounced as J in Bahasa). Yogyakarta shares the same island as the capital Jakarta but the two cities couldn’t be more different!

It was a great experience and gave me the opportunity to explore Indonesia with the helpful advice of some local friends. You can see the last trip I took here.

Yogyakarta (jogja) Tourist Attractions

Jakarta has more than 9 million people in its womb with bright skyscrapers crowded between some of the best streets I’ve ever seen, while Jokja is peaceful, rich in Javanese art. ancient times and home to only 400,000 inhabitants.

Yogyakarta today is home to the most popular university of the time, traditional art & music theater and beautiful thatched houses in the middle of rice fields.

The cultural heritage of Yogyakarta has a beautiful lineage of Hinduism and Buddhism that left behind temples and powerful religious buildings. Without further adieu, here is my list of the best things to see and do in Yogyakarta!

Here are the three best hotels in Yogyakarta based on the location close to Jogja attractions. I stayed with the first two and my friend suggested the third.

Yogyakarta Travel Guide: Tips, Sights & Highlights

Perfect if you’re planning to do a sunrise tour of Borobudur nearby. For the morning gate, you have to wake up around 3:30 am to be close to the main.

The hotel’s restaurant has excellent Javanese dishes to try. The room is clean, simple and decorated in a dark style but overall very comfortable.

My favorite of the trip, the Phoenix isa large, old hotel with a beautiful outdoor swimming pool that we had full access to and a great Western and Indonesian breakfast.

My favorite part is the choice of coffee every morning, with six different types of sugar. The rooms themselves are small but they provide wifi and free fruit upon arrival (try the rat tail fruit). Stay here for the atmosphere – just amazing!

Located in Yogyakarta city and historical center, theJambuluwuk is a boutique hotel with comfortable rooms and free wifi.

Built between the 8th and 9th centuries by the Cailendra Buddhist dynasty, little is known about the temple’s original purpose or name.

Borobudur has four main platforms with a large circular stupa on top. At each level, small buddhas sit on a circular ring.

In the background, four volcanoes cover Borobudur in dust (only one volcano is dormant). The yellow-orange fauna is a beautiful place for all stone systems.

MyTip: If you really want to go for the sunrise, book the special Borobudur sunrise ticket (or the Borobudur combo package if you’re visiting Prambanan).

Wait patiently alongside tourists, photographers and locals for the first glimpse of the lights but don’t worry too much about jockeying for the “best” position.

The best part of the day is 45 minutes after sunset, when the great structure is bathed in gold, the light shimmers and the morning mist falls beautifully in the background.

Prambanan Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 240 temples belonging to the next dynasty, led by the X Hindus.

In the evening, you can witness a spectacular Ramayana ballet performance. More than 200 dancers and musicians perform in the open air, with a beautiful temple as a backdrop.

MyTip: If you plan to visit both Borodudur and Prambanan temples (which you should, as they are very different!) buy a combo temple ticket to save on admission.

Both temples take about 1.5 hours to fully explore and can be seen.
